Introduction to Conspiracy theories

Although Kurt Cobain’s death happened in 1994, there have been many conspiracies surrounding his death. The most popular theory being he was coerced into suicide by Courtney Love, his wife at the time, Courtney Love (Grant, Cobain case). Dylan Carlson, Kurt’s close friend, started another approach, stating the artist was never suicidal before his death (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Conspiracy theorists began looking into the events surrounding the suicide of Kurt Cobain. Researchers then stated the most plausible explanation was his mental state became too much to bear (Harmony Recovery).

1st Conspiracy

Private investigator, Tom Grant, believed Kurt was coerced by his wife, Courtney Love, into his untimely suicide (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). She was vastly involved in Kurt’s life and the events and circumstances surrounding his death (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Many conspiracy theories began to suspect her due to her controlling nature and jealous tendencies (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Kurt was checked into a drug rehab facility for his heroin addiction when he left and was reported missing on April 1st, 1994 (Grant, Cobain Case). During the disappearance of Kurt, Courtney Love stated in an interview with private investigator Tom Grant, “I told the press I had an OD for him (Kurt)” (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Grant would later conclude in an investigation that Courtney used Kurt’s mother’s name in the missing persons report for Seattle police (Grant, Seattle Police Reports). Despite the circumstances, Courtney would evade being questioned by police. Grant’s investigation found Courtney’s aim in their marriage was to force herself into Kurt’s will. (Grant, Soaked in Bleach) On Kurt’s tour for the Nevermind album in Rome, GR, Courtney stated in an audio recording with Tom Grant, “He had an envelope saying Kurt wanted a divorce” (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). During the investigation of Kurt’s suicide note by the Seattle police, they concluded it was an authentic suicide note (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Tom Grant believed it was an alternative note of wanting a divorce. (Grant, Soaked in Bleach) In an audio recording with Tom Grant, Courtney stated, “I’d lie it all the way to the bank” (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Although her statement was used in a different context, her demeanor is how conspiracy theories sparked.

Additional conspiracy theories sparked the belief Kurt never showed any signs of being suicidal (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Kurt had grossed millions, a recent child, and friends surrounded him. One of Kurt’s closest friends, Dylan Carlson, paired with the private investigator, Tom Grant, to search for Kurt after his reported disappearance (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Dylan repeatedly stated in an audio recording, “Kurt was never suicidal” (Morgen, Montage of Heck). Detectives have yet to comment on whether there is an argument in classifying Kurt’s death. Conspiracists were left to decide whether or not it was a murder or suicide. Conspiracy theorists use an interview as evidence, as Kurt’s grandfather, Leland, stated Kurt sent him a letter with the statement, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.” (Morgen, Montage of Heck). While on tour for his Nevermind album in 1992. Dave Grohl stated Kurt showed any signs of intending to commit suicide (Morgen, Montage of Heck). Kurt’s friend’s statements are why many conspiracists believe he wasn’t suicidal. Even though in the police report, they stated he committed suicide (Grant, Cobain Case).  These conspiracies are often debunked as Kurt suffered from depression, took several anxiety medications, and had issues with heroin addiction (Grant, Soaked in Bleach). Researchers inferred Kurt’s mental state became too much to bear, leading to his eventual suicide. (Harmony Recovery)
